Following the Bayer AG’s Board of Directors’ approval
on 29 March, of their subsidiary Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH, the BayArena
is to be renovated and extended to accommodate more than 30,000 spectators.
A design competition was held that HPP won against two
renowned archi-
tectural practices. The design process will take place under
conditions of the utmost secrecy.
Construction is due to start at the end of the year
and will mainly consist of adding a further storey to the spectator stands,
thereby increasing seating from 22,500 to 30,000 places, providing a new roof
and a new four-storey wing on the western side of the arena with 17,560 m² GFA.
A new team area with a highly-modern infrastructure is on the lower floor of the
west wing and additional VIP, restaurant and press areas as well as further
event spaces will be provided on the other floors. But the most spectacular
difference for the spectators will be the new retractable roof, in a wheel and
spoke design, on top of which a colossal LED Bayer Cross will stand.
