Bulgaria’s future new landmark, the “Europe Tower Sofia”, will be designed by Düsseldorf architects HPP Hentrich-Petschnigg & Partner. This was announced last Thursday by the international competition jury in Sofia. HPP’s design won against competition from six other practices from Bulgaria, Austria, Great Britain and Germany. The brief was to integrate the “Europe Tower” into the “Europe Park Sofia” that is to form the new urban centre of the capital in the city borough of Vitosha. “Europe Park” is a joint venture between ECE of Hamburg, Europe’s leading developer and manager of shopping centres and Advance Properties Ltd., one of Bulgaria’s largest property companies and will be constructed on a former factory site. It will provide a mixture of residential units, offices, shopping and entertainment to meet the highest requirements of a modern, urban society that will hold its own on the international playing-field. The 40- storey tower providing 40,000 m² of GFA will be Bulgaria’s tallest building and was designed by HPP as a sculptural “solitaire”; a new, significant landmark for the booming capital. Construction of the “Europe Tower” is due to commence at the beginning of 2008 and to be completed in 2010.
