Renovation works to the Leipzig Opera House are
finished. Last Sunday, the Opera House presented its new face to the public in
an Open Day and today, the official opening ceremony will take place with the
premiere of Richard Wagner’s Opera “Rienzi”. The well-established Leipzig Opera
house, originally constructed in 1693, was completely rebuilt from 1956 to 1960
as a modern opera house on the site of the original building following its
destruction during the Second World War and has been fully refurbished and
renovated in only 308 days by HPP Architects. The client was the City of
Leipzig, who provided € 9.5 million for the refurbishment of this listed
building, enabling the auditorium, the great hall, and the foyer to be
completely renovated and brought up to the most modern construction and safety
standards. Fire protection measures, building technology, the acoustics and
access for the disabled were all improved. Fire escape and emergency routes
were improved, the electrics and sanitary installations renewed and hazardous
materials were removed from the building.
The most important change was the provision of new, raked seating in the
auditorium. 200 seats were dispensed with in favour of improved legroom between
the rows and wider seats. The auditorium now provides 1,250 seats with much
better views of the stage.
