The Central Railway Station in Leipzig has been named Station of the Year 2011. A jury of the “Allianz pro Schiene” (the German Pro-Rail Alliance) chose the terminal station as winner from nominations made by passengers in the City Station category. At the time of its inauguration in 1915, the station was the largest terminal station in Europe. It was destroyed by bombing in the 2nd World War and rebuilt in 1965 but ceased to be so important due to the increase in individual passenger travel. HPP came first in a competition held in 1994 to re-design the station and were immediately commissioned to commence work on the renovation and modernisation of the historical monument. Almost 100 years since first opening, the former “cathedral of progress” is once more a significant and popular building.
