In 1996, the construction of the Haus des Buches provided the German Booksellers’ Association with a new location which would house their literature centre, publishing companies; a place for cultural exchange. It was constructed on the site of the Buchhändlerhaus (Booksellers’ House) that was largely destroyed in 1943 and re-connects with the tradition of the “Graphic Quarter” in which it is situated. The complex lies close to the heart of the city and consists of a comb-shaped building that opens to the south-west, a slightly misaligned tower and part of the original building on Gerichtsweg. The individual buildings are connected to one another by means of a single-storey, glazed entrance cube.
