In 2000 it was decided to carry out the renovation works to the Frankenstadion without closing the stadium in order to provide 45,000 covered seats in time for the world Cup in 2006. The concept for the additional seating in the northwest and southwest corner sections is based on the design of the existing stands and roof. A new building known as the House of Sport was joined to the listed main stand at first floor level in order to preserve the form of the existing façade. The function areas in the stadium were also re-organised and the main stand was extended to provide a press area with 3,500 seats and VIP boxes. Retaining the octagonal shape of helped it to imprint itself on the memory of the visitors to the stadium in Nuremberg during the World Cup in 2006; it is one of the few multi-sport stadia that is perfectly suited to football.
